Sarah Graham is an artist that describes herself as a 'big kid at heart', and is therefore drawn to sweets and toys when finding a subject matter for her art.
In this piece modelled on the childhood classic film 'The Wizard of Oz', Graham has found figurines of the character cast and manipulated a scene with the toys to form this wonderful image iconic to the film.
By using toys, as she does here, Sarah is able to explore vivid colours, yet at the same time can maintain her style as a realist painter.
She often stages photography sessions of her subject matter in her own studio. Once she is happy with her chosen image, she begins the painting process. However, the final painted image often varies from the photo, as Graham sees
it as natural for changes to occur throughout the painting process. It is also extremely important to Graham that the finished piece looks like a painting and not simply an enhanced photograph; hence her choice in vivid and beautiful colours.
