Mick Simpson graduated from Staffordshire Polytechnic in Fine Art but the inspiration behind his desire to create sculptures, came not from his studies but from his home city of Stoke-on-Trent. The 6 famous old towns that form the city are affectionately known as 'The Potteries' and have created some of the worlds best Pottery and China and have a well earned reputation for producing world class, home grown, designers and sculptors.
His work is a unique in so many ways. Mick Simpson is one of only a handful of modelers able to make realistic and detailed sculptures covering many forms: figurative female, African game, canines and felines; He is able to create his work using any of the following: his own sketches, photos, books (or personal observation where possible) and his studio is full of them.
Mick Simpson is also one of the few professional sculptors who opt to use clay to model as opposed to wax, which is more pliable but he enjoys the artistic freedom that clay gives him and is happy to accommodate any of clay's limitations.
