15th November 2019 sees John release a New set of four limited edition (on paper) prints, each relatively small and ideal for the Christmas gift market. It has been a while since he has released a quartet of same size pieces at once and its a welcome addition to his growing range produced by Demontfort Fine Art publishers.
Sales of John’s limited editions and original paintings make him one of the most commercially successful landscape artists of the past 20 years with perhaps his only equal being Lawrence Coulson; his artwork is instantly recognizable as ‘Waterhouse’ paintings, with a distinct sepia or monochrome appearance in nearly all of his art up until 2011.
**Short video featuring John from 2015:
The 12th of April 2019 saw John unveil three new limited editions, the collection titled simply 'The New Collection' and featured what appears to be some of his largest (physical) size editions to date: landscape orientation 'This Life We Share' & 'A Place To Dream' and the square size 'A Moment In Time' - memorable for the deer & stag within.
John Waterhouse creates the most intricate and visually romantic artworks of the English countryside. A love of the outdoors was instilled within him from a young age whilst growing up in a rural Staffordshire village and he was inspired by continual walks outdoors, people watching and simply observing the scenery.
Using these visions, the artist creates his wonderful limited edition prints and canvas, using oils to paint the originals the prints will eventually be scanned, copies and giclee printed from.
Unknown to many, John’s parents also where in the art world and used to run successful galleries, an Ideal avenue to self-promote their son’s paintings and no doubt helping fuel his motivation as his career progressed.
Over the years, the demand for John to create more prints and paintings has increased and this saw him transitioning from: leaving school, working as a store keeper in a local warehouse, gradually reducing his working hours in order to continue practicing his craft & then switching careers to teach painting to young offenders in prisons.
However, the investment in becoming a professional artist, meant that John slowly but surely had to give up his tutoring and focus on painting, something I am personally glad he did!
After exhibiting his work around the UK and teaching himself the discipline to dedicate many hours painting in the studio, he has produced a huge body of work and has cemented his artistic reputation.
Limited Edition giclees such as ‘Golden Gate,’ portray the great understanding and connection the artist has with his rural subjects, trees. I feel the notion of light & the time of day this reflects, plays a huge role within his images and I am constantly guessing if I am studying John’s depiction of the morning or evening in some, far off, idyllic English village.
John's most recent Solo exhibition of 2019 was on the Cunard Queen Victoria ship, within their onboard exclusive gallery.
An internet search will often bring up another famous English artist of the same name ‘John William Waterhouse (J.W. Waterhouse),’ a 19th century a pre-Raphaelite styled painter & the two artists are not related.
