Paul was born on the South Coast of England, in the South East Dorset conurbation and has remained in the area into his adult life. He recalls he was just a small child when he first began to draw but became almost OCD with it, easily upset if his artwork did match the real landscapes he was copying. Now in later life, he feels he has left behind such frustrations and this has liberated him into becoming the artist he had always imagined; indeed looking at his naive paintings & how beautifully they flow, it is hard to think of Corfield has anything else!
At 18 years old Paul has the opportunity to attend College to study art but instead choose the security of a career in engineering. A self taught artist he continued to paint in his spare time using the medium of airbrush and was able to sell paintings & gain some commission work, so he always knew his work was marketable.
Some 15 years ago as luck would have it, his firm had some voluntary redundancy and Corfield stepped forward and decided to take a chance into the unknown - he finally followed his dream to become a full time artist!
Growing up in the idyllic seaside town of: Bournemouth, then moving to Poole and finally Wimborne, Paul has always been near lush landscapes & amazing sea views, with artistic inspiration just a short journey away. The sea, nature and the British countryside are close by in South Dorset and Paul likes to get away with his family as much as possible & journey to the many local beauty spots. Speaking of family, Corfield has said his children do inspire his paintings and even the TV they watched when they were small, often portraying a storybook and idolised version of the world, effected his painting outlook and has been reflected in his naive limited edition prints!
Corfield sites his kids watching ‘Postman Pat’ with the backdrop of village England & lush countryside as having an influence on his paintings. Indeed the ‘Mr Men’ books (by Roger Hargreaves) from Paul’s own childhood: with their little houses, round hills and simple happy backgrounds, he says have inspired his work heavily. The artist has also been fascinated by original oil paintings and the skill and practises that go into creating them and he has successfully found a happy medium in his own artwork between the childhood influences and the amazing brushwork of these old masters.
Over the last decade Paul Corfield has become firmly establish as a UK favourite for naive artwork and landscapes and his highly collectable range of limited edition prints from Washing Green publisher & his portfolio of original work, continues to gain attention from UK & international art audiences.show less
