Born in 1963, she initially studied at the Polytechnic of Liverpool, a 'printed textiles' course. During the 1980s, Annora Spence continued her education by completing a master's degree in the same subject at Birmingham Polytechnic.
Having completed her studies Annora Spence worked as an independent artist and designer. Since 1990, she has concentrated on her career as a painter and has enjoyed sell-out shows in London and abroad. In 1994 she started producing limited edition Silkscreen prints and each new edition has completely ‘sold out’ within record time. Annora Spence has recently began producing etchings and bronze sculptures.
Annora derives many of the ideas for her work from her extensive travels across Europe, India and Asia and is inspired by the characters, situations and colors she sees. Her palette varies from the rich, to pale and subtle, creating layers of tone and texture. The humour has always been an important ingredient in her work and the artist tries to accomplish this through the figurative form itself, manipulation of images and characters and the development of a story around them.
In the most recent paintings, interiors have become a major source of inspiration. Scale is also an important tool for her, by reversing the scale, she feels the mood of the image can often be made humourous.
