ALEXANDER MILLAR
Born in 1960 to a small Scottish mining town, Alexander Millar grew up surrounded by old burly men dressed in dark suits, and large women wearing pinnies whilst going about their day to day chores. His father worked for British Rail so many afternoons were spent sitting and observing life amongst the steam filled atmospheric station platforms. A decade or two later, Millar moved to Newcastle -Upon- Tyne and was immediately captured by the local characters regionally referred to as ‘Gadgies’.
From his younger years growing up in Scotland, to his teenage years spent in Newcastle, the inspiration from both became somewhat intertwined creating an artistic style that is quintessentially Millar. The scenes and atmosphere are quite clearly drawn from his memories growing up, as when viewing his art we are often set amongst the smoke and steam filled air of his hometown. Layered upon these dark but somewhat romantic scenes are the characters Millar has observed throughout his lifetime; in particular the Gadgie. Often painted from the back, the identity of the Gadgie doesn’t represent one person in particular. Instead, he takes on the roll of ‘every-man’. He is the man seen on his way to work, or coming home from a hard days labour. Or even on a particularly tough day, staggering home from his local pub after a well deserved pint…or four.
